Introduction
  • Find Free Books

  • Tech To Make Life Easier

  • Connect To Entertainment

  • Fix It Yourself

Having a free audiobook in the car for when you run errands, on your phone when you're traveling, or on your computer to enjoy while you work, can keep you sane and add some fun and interest to your day.

These websites offer completely free audiobooks for you to download and listen to whenever you want. You won't find any samples here — at these websites, you'll be able to download complete audio books.

The free audio book downloads below are all legal. They are either public domain or the websites have permission from the author to offer the audio book for free.

Most of the time you'll be downloading these books as MP3 files (or sometimes WMA or AAC files) that can play on your computer, tablet, phone, iPod, or MP3 player. There are free audio converter tools you can use if you need the audiobook to be in a different file format.

Looking for more free books in other formats? Download free books for your Kindle, free children's Kindle books, free romance ebooks, or free Nook books. Also read our guide to finding free ebooks.

There are lots of websites aside from the ones below that offer free audio books that you can download through torrent websites. However, you should know that while that method of sharing audio ebooks and other digital files (e.g., movies, software, music) may seem completely fine, it's normally illegal in most countries and is typically considered an unsafe method for sharing files since it's a common way to transmit malware.

  • Several ways to find a specific audiobook

  • Lets you recieve new audiobooks by podcast

  • Available in many languages

What We Don't Like

  • Can't sort audiobooks by most popular

LibriVox has a huge selection of free audio books that are recordings of volunteers who have read chapters from books that are in the public domain.

You can find a free audio book by searching by title, author, genre/subject, or language. You can also browse all the titles in the catalog, view only the most recent audio books, and subscribe to new releases as podcasts.

Once you reach a book's description page, you can read more about it and even listen to the chapters individually without having to download each of them.

However, if you do want to download the whole audio book, every chapter included, you can do so in a ZIP file, directly from LibriVox. Some are also available through a torrent and M4B file.

LibriVox is also available for iOS and Android devices so you can download audio books to your phone or tablet, or stream them on the go.

Lit2Go

What We Like

  • Organizes audiobooks by reading level

  • Books are categorized in unique genres

  • You can download books by chapter

  • Some ebooks are included for you to read along with the audiobook

What We Don't Like

  • Doesn't let you download the whole book at once with all chapters included

  • Includes only English-read audiobooks

Lit2Go is a unique free audio book website that organizes their audio books based on readability using the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level index. Don't worry if you aren't sure what that is — Lit2Go is a great place to download audio books even if you're not a teacher.

Each book can be downloaded by the chapter and includes popular classic titles like Aesop's Fables, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Anne of Green Gables, The Call of the Wild, Oliver Twist, Wuthering Heights, and many, many more.

You can browse through genres like Fable, Gothic, Epic, Adventure, Informational, Horror, and Poetry, among others. The audio book downloads can also be found by collection such as The Civil War and The Books of Oz.

For some of these audio books, you can also download a PDF version of the text to follow along, in addition to a student activity worksheet. Others have the text on the book's download page.

  • Several sorting options for finding the perfect audiobook

  • Lets you filter the audiobook downloads by certain criteria

  • Usually multiple audio format options when downloading

  • Can be downloaded in bulk or by individual chapter

  • Many audiobooks are poorly named and hard to recognize at first glance

  • There aren't many non-English audiobook downloads

The Internet Archive also has a ton of free audio book downloads that you can browse through by subject, keywords, or using the search box. There are around 18,000 results for audio books and poetry on this website.

My favorite way to find free audio books at Internet Archive is by sorting the books by view count to find the most popular audio books.

Popular audio books here include The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Jane Eyre, The Swiss Family Robinson, Moby Dick, The Art of War, and Dracula.

Chosen

Some are available in multiple formats so that you can download an audio book in the MP3 or OGG format, for example.

Mind Webs is another part of Internet Archive that has several dozen classic sci-fi audio books.

These are public domain books, so you might not see anything here that differs from the other public domain audio book websites we've already mentioned.

  • Some audiobooks are available in multiple audio formats

  • Perfect place for classic audiobooks

  • You can download individual chapters as well as whole books

What We Don't Like

  • Not as many audiobooks as similar websites

  • The website isn't as fun or easy to use because there aren't graphics

This free audio book website specializes in classic and fiction audio books and you can view them by most popular, recently added, or by author's last name.

Some examples include Romeo and Juliet, The Wind in the Willows, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, and Autobiography of Mark Twain.

All the audio books here can be downloaded as an MP3 file and some of them as an M4B file for the iPhone/iPod. To download hundreds of their audiobooks at once and support the site, you can purchase the short stories on a DVD.

  • Gives away two free audiobooks every week in the summer

  • You can sign up for alerts to know when new audiobooks are available

What We Don't Like

  • Audiobooks are available only in the summer

  • Limits your audiobook downloads to two per week

Audiobook Sync (SYNC) is a free summer reading program meant for kids 13 and older, but anyone can take part in it to get free audio book downloads.

SYNC gives away two free audio books every week over the summer. It's a perfect way for kids to keep their comprehension skills sharp before returning to school, but also provides a way for adults to grab some free audio ebooks.

The SYNC service is sponsored by AudioFile Magazine, and the books themselves are usable through the OverDrive app on mobile and desktop devices.

You can sign up for SMS or email alerts to get reminded when SYNC releases new titles. It returned this year on April 25th.

of 22

New Fiction

What We Don't Like

  • Few selections

  • Can't download the whole book in one file

New Fiction is a unique audiobook website that describes its readings as 'modern-day radio dramas.'

There aren't very many choices here but all of them are free and can be streamed from the site or downloaded.

of 22

Project Gutenberg

What We Like

  • Provides a massive source of free downloads

  • Supports lots of languages

  • Lets you save audiobook chapters individually or download the entire book

What We Don't Like

  • Some audiobooks are read by a computer, and so aren't as fluid or easy to listen to

  • Most chapters don't have descriptive titles

Project Gutenberg has audiobooks that are human-read and also some that are computer-generated. These are public domain books that have been turned into audio books that are now available for free for anyone who's interested.

The easiest way to find an audio book here is to browse through the authors and titles. You can also view them by languages and by the time they were added — over the last 24 hours, the last 7 days, and the last 30 days.

Another place to look for free audio books at Project Gutenberg is the Top 100 page.

ejunto

The Chosen By Chaim Potok Audiobook Free Download

  • Lets you listen on iTunes or download as an MP3

  • It's a great source for audiobooks about history

What We Don't Like

  • Has a limited number of audiobooks compared to similar websites

  • Some links don't work

  • Can't download in bulk; only chapters at a time

ejunto is the place to be if you're wanting audio books on American history, philosophy, autobiographies, and similar topics.

Although there's a sparse selection and you can't listen to these public domain audio books on the ejunto website, you can download them to your computer for free.

Some of the free audio ebooks here include a George Washington biography, Benjamin Franklin's autobiography, an audio recording of the US Constitution, and Second Treatise on Government by John Locke.

If you can't get the audio book to work on the ejunto website, try visiting the iTunes link on the download page.

Scribl

What We Like

  • Provides audiobooks that normally cost

  • Lets you filter the audiobooks results by language

  • Lots of filtering options for styles, character info, etc.

What We Don't Like

  • Most audiobooks are not free

  • It's hard to find just the free audiobooks

  • Must sign in to download books

Scribl is a very different audio book website because while there are some free audio books, most of them come at a cost. It's really a hit or miss type of situation when you look for free audio ebooks here.

However, we've included it here because you might find unique books that aren't free anywhere else. Just make sure to grab them quickly because as books get more popular, Scribl puts a price on them.

Because Scribl has other things, too, like ebooks and podcasts, you want to make sure to filter the results to only show audio books.

There used to be a free audio book website at Podiobooks.com but it's now a part of Scribl.

of 22

Spotify

What We Like

  • Lets you stream audiobooks absolutely free

  • Works on computers and mobile devices

  • Also includes tons of free music

What We Don't Like

  • It isn't easy to find audiobooks among all the music

  • Only paying customers can download the free audiobooks

  • You have to have a user account to even search for audiobooks

Free audio books at Spotify? Yes! With a catch: it's only free to download the books if you're a paying user. Spotify memberships allow for downloading content while free users can only stream the books.

The free audio books at Spotify are not organized very well because Spotify is a music streaming service, not an audio book website — but there is a good handful of them available.

If the link below doesn't have the audiobook you want, try doing a general search for audiobooks on Spotify. Use these Spotify search tips if you need help.

of 22

YouTube

What We Like

  • Any audiobook you find is free to stream

  • No user account is needed to view or download audiobooks

  • Also has lots of free music and videos

What We Don't Like

  • Doesn't provide a built-in way for finding audiobooks

  • Most audiobooks don't have a download link

Similar to Spotify, YouTube is not primarily a good source for audiobooks because most of the content is music and videos. However, you might have luck finding some really great free audio books on YouTube if you know how to search for them.

If you can't find an audio book on YouTube by searching for its name followed by 'audiobook' (e.g., the six pillars of self esteem audiobook), try Reddit. The /r/audiobooksonyoutube sub is built specifically for sharing which videos on YouTube are actually audiobooks.

Once you find an audiobook you like, and so long as you know it's public domain or is legal to download, you can download just the audio from the video with a YouTube to MP3 converter.

10 Sites for Free AudioBooks Download

1. PROJECT GUTENBERG (Free)

We have, to begin with, this long-established website as it’s one of the largest available and partners with both LibriVox and AudioBooksForFree. Many thousands of books in the public domain are available to read, and you can browse listings arranged by title, author, and language. User can choose to listen to works either read by computer-generated voices or with human narration. Of course, the latter is a far superior option so you might want to bear this in mind before you make your selection.

3. MIND WEBS (Free)

The Chosen Audiobook free. download full

It’s always good to mix things up a bit, and this site is perfect for those who want radio dramatizations, particularly those looking for classic science fiction. It covers content from 169 half-hour radio shows from the 1970’s to the 1990’s, and although some of the recordings are low-quality because of their age, the site really benefits from the nostalgia and niche factor of these hidden gems.

4. OPEN CULTURE (Free)

Open Culture offers educational and cultural media, and there are 900 free titles to listen to in a variety of formats. The majority of these are classics, and you can download them to your computer or to your MP3 player. Find fiction, non-fiction, and poetry, and cover a whole host of genres and authors such as Mark Twain, Ray Bradbury, Virginia Woolf, George Orwell, William Shakespeare, and H. G. Wells.

5. LEARN OUT LOUD (Free)

This site features a huge section of audio book downloads, with more than 10,000 educational and inspirational works to choose from. They can be played on Android devices, iPhone, or iPod, or with MP3 downloads to a portable audio player. We should point out that while many of the audiobooks are free, there are charges for some of the others. It features a Download Library and dedicated sections for new and notable audio books, as well as the top 10 bestsellers. You can browse easily through the many categories, and just a few of these are arts and entertainment, literature, social sciences, politics, self-development, and philosophy.

6. SYNC (Free)

The Chosen Audiobook Free Download

This is a rather niche suggestion and certainly not for everyone. However, if you are a teenager or have a teenager in the family, this could be the perfect site to look at, as users can receive two complete downloads every week. The free summer project is aimed at those aged over 13, and this year’s program opens on April 27. Powered by OverDrive and sponsored by AudioFile Magazine, the program is partnered with many others including Brilliance Audio, Dreamscape, HarperAudio, and Listening Library to name just a few.

Free Audiobooks Download No Trials

7. STORYNORY (Free)

Storynory is another great choice for those with kids, but this time it focuses on the younger members of the family. It’s a great resource for bedtime stories, particularly if you just don’t have a chance to read a story to the children yourself. It provides free audiobooks covering original stories, classics and fairytales, and even poems and music. There are hundreds of choices available and further stories being added each week. Probably the highlight of Storynory is the energetic narration that should certainly keep kids interested.

8. THOUGHT AUDIO (Free)

Unlike others, sites Thought Audio only provides free streaming online. However, if you do want to download and listen offline you can opt for a $10 yearly “Zip Pass.” If you don’t want a complete book as a single audio file, this site could be a good option as it breaks down into smaller segments. The site is powered by WordPress and Portfolio and contains an impressive selection of titles in the realms of literature and philosophy.

9. SCRIBL (PREVIOUSLY PODIOBOOKS) (Free)

Scribl has free audiobooks as well as Ebooks and podcasts and prides itself that much of its content is unique. It does include recent works, and rare documents offered on other sites, there are some very interesting works available. Books are available in an episodic format, and an unusual aspect of Scribe is that users can make a financial donation to any of the authors on the site if they wish.

10. LIT2GO (Free)

Now we get to the last of our chosen sites for free audio download, and a feature of this educational site is that some of the audiobooks come with an accompanying PDF. That’s a good idea as it enables users to read the text at the same time as listening, useful for those learning English or who don’t use it as their first language. Content includes short stories, plays, and poems, and they can be downloaded to your computer, CD, or MP3 player. An interesting point with this site is that you can browse by reading level as well as the usual author, title, and genre.

Conclution

Each of these best audiobook apps noted here has its own unique features that have made it famous. We all enjoy the free things (free sites above), but do note that the audio books prices asked in some apps are really very cheap compared to their rarity and quality. While the world is running towards freeing knowledge, audio book apps have set out to help humanity gain twice as much knowledge within the same period. Make the best use of it, read more than ever, dance like nobody is watching and live like it’s heaven on Earth!
